St David's Day in Brecon

Brecon Town Council has secured more than £10,000 funding from the Welsh Government’s St David’s Day Fund to bring local school children together at a special celebration of our national day.

Announcing the fund, First Minister of Wales Eluned Morgan MS said:

“St David’s Day is a chance to celebrate Wales’ unique and rich tapestry of traditions. From school eisteddfods to St David’s Day parades, people across Wales and around the world come together to show off the best of our culture and so much more that Wales has to offer.”

Brecon’s exciting event will follow the traditional St David’s Day Parade led by Ysgol y Bannau on Monday 2nd March and it will take place at Brecon’s Market Hall. Children from Llanfaes, Priory, Ysgol Golwg Pen y Fan, Penmaes, Ysgol y Bannau, Sennybridge and the High School will all take part. Representatives from the schools have been working with the Town Council to plan the event and ensure it reflects the school curriculum.

Cllr Matthew Dorrance, who has led the work on behalf of Brecon Town Council said:

“I am delighted that the Welsh Government has backed our plans to celebrate St David’s Day in Brecon.

“Our event will bring children from local schools together to celebrate our culture, heritage, language, traditions and the modern Wales we’re proud to call home.

“We have excellent theatre companies, artists, singers, musicians and story tellers all coming to work with the children and I think it’s going to be a very special day that they will remember for some time.”

Mayor of Brecon, Cllr Marie Matthews added:

“Wales and Brecon have so much to be proud of and I am pleased that the Town Council is able to stage this special event. It would not be possible without the funding from the Welsh Government and dedication of the organisers. St David is remembered for his simple but powerful message: “Gwnewch y pethau bychain” do the little things. That message is especially important in schools, where small acts of kindness, effort, and respect can make a big difference every day.

“I am looking forward to what will be a brilliant day for Brecon.”
